Mexican Embroidery

During the winter of 2006 in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, I was inspired to create a body of work using the manta fabric stamped with embroidery patterns found at the Tianguis, the Tuesday market. I embarked on a new journey combining my interest in old photographic images, printmaking and the tradition of sewing. The series is called “Recuerdo”, a Spanish word for both a keepsake and a memory, a title that incorporated both issues of memory and time.  The pattern samples have transcended their original function, that of domestic objects (tortilla cloths), to works of art. Inspired by the rich tradition and history of embroidered textiles in Mexico, I was able to merge my own image making with those of traditional Mexican crafts.
