Underlying the painted surface is an actual photograph. Even when scarcely visible, tension is created between the reality of the black and white image and the richly painted surface. The photograph serves as a starting point, a guide to places unknown. Paint is used to obscure rather than further the illusion of the photographic surface. On this journey, primitive figures have emerged. The process queries: what is real? what is hidden? what is revealed?
